Research
Dr Gary Menary has been researching the injection stretch blow moulding (ISBM) process for the past 18 years. In the last 10 years he has led RCUK, EU and industrial projects worth a total value of €3.5 million resulting in over 50 publications and substantial savings to industry. The main focus of the research is to reduce material and energy usage in ISBM by developing a fundamental understanding of the manufacturing process using skills in simulation, material modelling and characterisation, experimental mechanics and instrumentation.
Esteem, Awards and Honours
Dr Menary is on the editorial board of the International Journal of Materiel Forming, and was guest editor for a special edition on stretch blow moulding and thermoforming. He has been on the board of directors of the European Association of Material Forming (ESAFORM) since 2006. He was the ESAFORM conference chairman in 2011 and is currently a member of the Jury for the ESAFORM scientific prize. Several of his papers have won awards including the 2004 Publishing Prize for “the best paper published in the volume” from the IMECHE, Journal of Process Mechanical Engineering and the James Walker award for the best paper published in the field of polymers from the Institute of Materials.
Knowledge Transfer & Exploitation
Dr Menary is also the founder and director of the spin out company, Blow Moulding Technologies which started trading in 2012 and sells instrumentation and software to the blow moulding industry. The company is selling specialist instrumentation for measuring PET preform temperature via infra-red based on patented technology.
